I've been playing wi-fi for a few weeks now and I've figured out thsat you can play against your friends by registrating eachother's friend codes. Who ever wants to battle me can but you have to give me your friend code and name. The two games I have for WI-FI are Pokemon Diamond and Mario Kart DS.
